We realize that for many patients a stay in hospital can be a daunting prospect. Being unsure about what to expect can add to worries.
We have put together some information about what to do before, during and after you stay which we hope will set your mind at ease.
Prior to being admitted to hospital you will receive information about your hospital stay from your primary physician, assigned nurse or patient educator. You will also receive an admission letter which may have some guidance to help prepare you for admission to hospital.
You need to bringFor identification purposes, all patients should bring with them a :
- Valid health card
- Admission card
- Passport/ID copies
- Admission fee for non-Qataris
All medical documents and prescriptions you are taking (in their original containers), should be brought to the hospital. Once you have been admitted, the hospital will be able to provide you with prescribed medications. If your child requires a walking or hearing aid, please bring these with you.
Hospital will provide your child withIn terms of clothes/toiletries, the hospital provides:
- Night gowns for children, however patient preference will be respected
- Slippers or soft shoes
- Toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, hairbrush, towel and tissues
- Books and magazines
Additional items can be brought at your own discretion. If you are a non-Qatari resident you are required to pay hospital charges and so should also bring money for the payment of these fees. Other patients may wish to bring a small amount of money for buying items they would like to purchase within the hospital.

Patient ID band:An identification (ID) band will be placed on your child’s wrist, when you are admitted as an in-patient at HMC. The band must be worn by your child at all times. Check your child’s ID band to make sure the information is right. If your child is not wearing a band or has the wrong one, it can lead to errors that can result in the wrong care for your child. Staff have been instructed to check the ID band before providing care to your child. Your child must keep the band on at all times while admitted at HMC.
During Your StayWhen you arrive at the hospital, you should report to the admitting counter at reception. Here you will be issued with an admission card. Once your admission has been processed, you will be accompanied to your room by a member of hospital staff. You will be given the opportunity to provide emergency contact details of friends or relatives, sponsor or employer during your initial nursing assessment on the ward.
Healthcare Team If you have any questions or problems during your stay, you should contact your assigned nurse or healthcare provider who will be happy to address any concerns or queries. Your doctors, nurses and case manager should discuss all treatments and procedures with you and provide an appropriate explanation. They should also provide you with educational leaflets and information according to your needs. If you think it is necessary for you to see your medical records, these can be requested.
Inpatient care You will be asked to provide written consent for certain procedures and diagnostic tests which you may need during your stay. All the necessary information relating to your required treatment, surgery or procedure will be provided, allowing you to make an informed decision about consent.
Patients are allowed to refuse treatment or tests and the consequences of refusal will be clearly explained by medical staff. As Rumailah Hospital is a teaching hospital, medical students and researchers make an important contribution to the development and advancement of the hospital. If you do not wish medical students to be part of an element of your care, please notify your assigned nurse. This is also the case if wish to be omitted from teaching or research programs.
Room allocation Shared rooms (five, four, three or two bedded rooms) are the most common available rooms at Rumailah Hospital. Single room allocation is restricted according to the medical needs and condition of patients.

Please note that there are laundry services in the ward. Also note that although mobile phones are permitted on most wards, they are forbidden in some units and during some procedures. Patients are provided with meals and snacks on the wards at the following times:
- Breakfast: 7am
- Snack: 9am
- Lunch: 11am
- Snack: 3pm
- Dinner: 6pm
Discharge:You will be provided with a provisional discharge date on the day of your child’s admission. If you have not been given this date, you can request it. Just before you leave the hospital, you will be handed a Discharge Summary. You will also receive any medication your child may require from the hospital.
Billing procedures For non-Qatari patients, payment is required upon discharge at the cashier desk. The accepted payment method is cash only.
